YKG DMV: House Of Ruth & 2019!
Happy New Year, everyone!
2018 flew by so fast for YKG, and we are beyond ready to tackle 2019. We have some wonderful projects planned for this year and we are super excited. For our first project of 2019, we will be volunteering with House of Ruth. What a perfect way to kick off the new year!
In light of our project, we would like to discuss domestic violence and abuse. Domestic violence can happen to anyone regardless of race, age, sexual orientation, religion, ability or genders. There are many forms of domestic violence including physical, sexual, emotional, economic, and psychological abuse. In Maryland alone, 1 in 4 women are victims of domestic violence.
Twenty people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. This averages to about 10 million men and women a year. Yep. That says 10 million. Pretty insane, right?
The statistics for domestic violence are insane. In America, a woman is assaulted or beaten every nine seconds. Nine seconds. It only takes nine seconds for a woman to go from a partner to a victim.
There are over 200,000 reported incidents of domestic violence a year in Maryland. All these men and women are survivors and heroes. By simply reporting the incident, they are one step closer to their safety. Some victims take the abuse for years before they tell anyone.
Imagine not feeling safe in your own home. Imagine having to conceal your bruises and pain from everyone. Imagine being too scared to even close your eyes at night. You can’t. We can’t even begin to imagine the amount of pain these people have gone through without having experienced it ourselves. (God forbid). We are passionate about helping these people in any way possible. No one should feel unsafe in their own home. Although we can’t stop all violence at the snap of our fingers, we CAN help by volunteering with House Of Ruth. We are going to be volunteering with them by working kids. Furthermore we are organizing a drive to collect supplies that can assist the families. WE NEED YOUR HELP Please consider donating if you can.
House of Ruth helps victims by providing them with food, shelter, counseling, legal and other services that ensure their continued survival. They also provide a confidential hotline which is available 24/7. The counselors are trained in crisis intervention, safety planning, counseling and legal referrals, and proactive advocacy to victims. We are determined to help these amazing survivors but need your help. Together we can address domestic violence: one survivor at a time. Stand with us. Stand with these amazing women. Stand with these children who are the leaders of tomorrow.
Let’s start the year right!!!!!!
